An Experiment: CPM or oCPM When Targeting Facebook Fans With Ads?

A phrase I repeat regularly when it comes to succeeding with Facebook ads is “Never assume anything.” If you assume you know, you don’t. As a result, you may either waste money unknowingly or miss an opportunity.

This is why I recommend starting most campaigns broadly in terms of targeting and placement. If you assume mobile is going to be most cost effective and sidebar won’t work, for example, you may be surprised by the actual results.
Since I’m always second guessing, experimenting and trying new things, I recently decided to test a long-held advertising habit when targeting Fans only.

My Typical Bidding Behavior
First of all, a very quick overview of your bidding options when creating Facebook ads:
Cost Per Click (CPC): The maximum you’ll pay per click on your ad. Since distribution is based on an auction format, the amount you ultimately pay per click will depend upon the competition.
Cost Per 1,000 Impressions (CPM): The maximum you’ll pay per 1,000 impressions of your ad. Once again, the amount you pay will depend upon competition for the same audience and placement.
Optimized Cost Per 1,000 Impressions (oCPM):Facebook optimizes your ad by showing it to the people most likely to perform your desired action (within your target). Additionally, bidding is automated. Your bid will change dynamically based on competition, assuring that you’ll reach your desired audience.
Since oCPM is “optimized,” the final CPM price is typically much higher than CPC or regular CPM. But — also because it’s optimized — I’ve found it’s almost always most efficient.
While I used to split test CPM vs. oCPM in particular, I rarely do anymore. I’ve simply found repeatedly that oCPM gives me the best Cost Per Desired Action (Page Like, Link Click, Conversion, etc.).
This includes targeting Fans, whether it be promoting a post or selling a product.

Second Guessing My Advertising Habits

However, I started wondering recently if using oCPM made sense when targeting my Fans only. Why, for example, do I need Facebook to optimize my audience? By reaching my Fans, I’m already reaching a naturally optimized group of people.
And if CPM costs less than oCPM (typically significantly less), might I save money by going with it instead? Or is oCPM so effective that the higher price per impression doesn’t matter?
This is what I wanted to find out. So I ran a test…

CPM vs. oCPM for Fans Test: Link Clicks

I promoted four different posts last week. In each case, I targeted Fans and email subscribers (who aren’t current Fans) only in the News Feed (desktop and mobile). I optimized for Link Clicks for each one.
These are organic posts that I simply promoted to reach more of my relevant audience in an effort to increase website traffic. Here are the four posts:
Jon Loomer Digital Promoted Posts 12-9 to 12-12
I promoted each for a very short period of time because I prefer to only have posts promoted while I don’t have another new blog post shared in my Fans’ News Feeds. They all ran from late morning when the post was originally shared to 6:00am the following morning.
In each case, I created separate campaigns for CPM and oCPM, with two different ads in each (one targeted at Fans and one at newsletter subscribers who aren’t Fans). Each campaign had a lifetime budget of $5, and I set a maximum CPM bid of $2.50 (reminder: oCPM is set dynamically).
To summarize, here are the campaigns that were created:
  • Reach Rant – Fans and Subscribers – oCPM
  • Reach Rant – Fans and Subscribers – CPM
  • Increase Reach – Fans and Subscribers – oCPM
  • Increase Reach – Fans and Subscribers – CPM
  • News Feed Test – Fans and Subscribers – oCPM
  • News Feed Test – Fans and Subscribers – CPM
  • Facebook Offer ROI – Fans and Subscribers – oCPM
  • Facebook Offer ROI – Fans and Subscribers – CPM
Since the impact of the ads targeted at the newsletter subscribers was so minimal (it was a small group and Facebook preferred targeting Fans), I will lump that ad in from this point forward and focus only on the campaign results.

CPM vs. oCPM: The Results

Here’s a comparison of results on a campaign vs. campaign basis:
CampaignSpendLink ClicksCost PerCPM
Reach Rant – oCPM$5.0044$0.11$5.83
Reach Rant – CPM$1.6710$0.17$1.38
News Feed Test – oCPM$5.0059$0.08$4.35
News Feed Test – CPM$1.5818$0.09$1.38
Increase Reach – oCPM$5.0097$0.05$5.95
Increase Reach – CPM$1.6432$0.05$1.40
Facebook Offer ROI – oCPM$5.0027$0.19$5.17
Facebook Offer ROI – CPM$2.1211$0.19$1.33
A couple of things should immediately jump out at you:
  1. The cost per 1,000 impressions is significantly higher (3-4X) when using oCPM
  2. The budget was never reached (not even close) when using CPM
Now let’s take a look at the overall results, lumping all similar campaigns together to compare CPM vs. oCPM:
Campaign Bidding MethodSpendLink ClicksCost PerCPM
oCPM$20.00227$0.09$5.24
CPM$7.0171$0.10$1.37
Okay, now let’s start breaking this down:
  • Cost Per 1,000 Impressions nearly 4X higher for oCPM
  • oCPM reached full budget, while CPM reached only 35% of it
  • Cost Per Link Click nearly the same
  • oCPM resulted in more than 3X the Link Clicks
Also, here’s another important stat that I haven’t covered yet: Total Impressions…
  • CPM: 5,124
  • oCPM: 3,817
Even though the ads are being shown to 74% of the audience, oCPM is resulting in three times the link clicks.
So what we find here is that while the Cost Per Link Click is nearly the same, oCPM brings more results. In order for this to happen, oCPM must actually be optimized — Facebook must be showing my ads to Fans most likely to click on a link in order to counter the significantly higher Cost Per 1,000 Impressions.

A Note on Bidding

Since I didn’t come close to reaching my budget using CPM, it’s important to note my maximum bid of $2.50. I could not bid higher than that due to my $5 daily budget.
The budget could have held the campaigns back some. However, keep in mind that the overall Cost Per 1,000 Impressions for my CPM campaigns was $1.37. Since I didn’t get particularly close to that $2.50 maximum, I question whether it would have made much of a difference.
That said, I have to recognize it as a potential limitation. I plan to try this again with a $10 budget and $5 maximum bid (if not $20 and $10).

In Conclusion

This study reaffirms my faith in oCPM. While using the CPM bidding method may seem like the most cost effective method on paper, oCPM is so well optimized that I still end up getting better results.
Now, keep in mind that these results are for my Page only. It’s a small sample size. While I trust the results for me, you should always test to see what works for you.
How about you? Do you tend to use CPM or oCPM when you target Fans only?

Are You a Junk Information Junkie?

I read a Facebook status update the other day that went something like this: "Spent a few hours cleaning up my e-mail inbox. Down to zero unread messages!"

Meanwhile, in the Gmail account I use for work, I have 1,249 unread messages. My personal Gmail account has 5,162 unread messages. The Yahoo account I use strictly to play fantasy sports? I have 28,815 unread messages. Oh, the shame. And I know I’m not alone.

We’re living in an age of information overload. But the problem isn’t just that we’re hamstrung by the sheer volume of the information we’re bombarded with. It’s also the quality of the information we’re consuming. The scurrilous and salacious sells, and we’re gorging ourselves on it. Experts have a name for this. It’s called junk information, and like junk food, it can be delicious – and dangerous.

I’m just as guilty as anybody. And we all know how easy it is to fall down the Internet rabbit hole. An article on Kim Kardashian’s latest selfie leads to an op-ed savaging Kanye West’s recent circus of a wedding proposal, which prompts daily “Kanye is self-destructing” updates on TMZ, so you check out a list of the top 20 craziest things ever said by musicians, and since you’re checking out lists, you click over to a list of the top 27 cutest baby animals… and then, four hours have passed and you’re no closer to getting your work done.

Junk information can be a productivity killer. Clay Johnson, author of the book “The Information Diet: A Case for Conscious Consumption,” is on a crusade to get us on a more positive track. He offers a host of tools that can help you cut back on junk information:

Everything in moderation: Since information is something we decide to consume, Johnson says we must be mindful of what we take in. For every lowest-common-denominator rant we read in the comments section after a news article, we should make an effort to read something of high quality, such as the Sunday editorial section of The New York Times or taking an hour to watch the PBS News Hour. The goal is moderation and tempering vitriol, trivial information and wild conjecture – or low quality information – with thoughtful reasoning and cold, hard facts.

Fitness is your friend: Johnson advises to try something called “information fitness,” which is another way of saying put strict limits on your consumption in order to preserve your ability to focus. Tabbed browsing and endless e-mail windows are often the productive office worker’s worst enemy. Try an app like Mailbox or some of the tab management tools available for Chrome and Firefox.

Take a time-out: Set a timer. For every hour your spend working, you can take ten minutes for an unbridled junk information bacchanal, or just to walk around and get some fresh air. Reset. Repeat. The best part? The experts say that these short breaks actually reduce information overload and boost productivity.

Go vegan: Or as Johnson calls it, an infovegan. An infovegan is “someone who makes a deliberate decision to remove a vast amount of news and information sources from one’s diet, sticking to a well-constrained, allowable set of consumption inputs for their own health’s sake.” While this may be extreme for many, it may be the best – and only – option for some of the most diehard junk information junkies out there who are looking to boost their productivity.

Listen folks I have been working online for a while and setting up a presence to be able to tell my story to the world and allow my relatives and friends from all over the world to see what cool and new things I have been doing.  Essentially telling my story...

10 Steps to Article Writing for Dummies

Are you an article writer? And you are having challenges and problems meeting your article writing goals that is creating and writing thousands of valuable, relevant and unique articles? Then this article is definitely for you. Most article writers always complain of not knowing what methods and techniques to create quality articles on the web, and always come up with quality article ideas that will always generate human interest and attract high pageviews to your article pages.

In this article, I have suggested several ways you can always generate quality article ideas so, you can easily increase your income especially when you write for sites like Triond that pays you based on pageviews:

1. Increase Your Knowledgebase on Different Topics: Despite how good and knowledgable you are in a particular topic or subject, you will not be able to write tons of quality and unique articles. So the best way to increase your ability to write hundreds and even thousands of articles that are unique, full of quality and value to your readers is to begin to increase your knowledge on either related areas of your expertise or entirely new subjects. For example, if you are knowledgable on Internet marketing, you can learn about other related topics under Internet marketing such as: blogging, WordPress, WordPress themes and plugins, etc or you can learn entirely new subjects such as sports, gardening, journalism or fashion.
Doing this increases your capacity to create a lot of quality articles and helps improve your writing skills and appeal to a wide range of readers and can land you a lot of freelancewriting gigs as a freelancewriter.

2. Research on The Web and Write Review Articles: The Internet is full of interesting websites that a lot of people want to know about in various niche markets online. All you need to do is to research all over the Internet and look for websites you feel offer some sort of cool and interesting features and services or products that is worth talking about and that will interest people online, write short articles about these sites teaching about their products and services and publish them on Triond.

These type of articles are easy to write, all you need to do is to send about one or two hours reading about everything and section on the site, try to sign up on the site if it offers a membership option and get to know about it’s membership benefits and all, summarize everything you have gathered and learn’t about the website in a 500 – 1,500 word article. There are millions of sites that offer interesting products, services and features to the web community in different niche markets/industries that you can write thousands of articles on. You can write your first review article now, don’t go too far, check out sites in your niche market or topic of specialization on Google search engine, spend some time studying each website and summarize all you have learn’t about the site in an article, then you have your review article written. You can review as many websites as you can possibly research on.

3. Personal Experiences: What are your personal experiences in life whether good or bad experiences? You can offer some form of knowledge or advice to other people from your personal experiences in life, love, family, religion, relationship with the opposite sex, job or business.
Writing does not have to be all professional, write about your personal; experiences and you will be amazed how many people want to learn a few things about your experiences as an individual even your personal mistakes can be an article teaching people how to avoid your mistakes. I am about to publish an article on Triond based on my personal experiences on my search on earning a living online. Though not yet published but you can be notified via your NewsFeed when you add me as a freind when the article published.

4. Your Hobbies: A Hobby is an activity you do at your spare time both consciously and unconsciously. You can write an article (or articles) based on your hobby because to a great extent you have some things to share on your hobby that you may not know at the moment. All you need to do is to ask yourself reasons why you choose that particular hobby and what are the benefits you have derived from your  hobby, list them and explain on paper, there you have article in the making, you get the picture? Your hobby can be an activity non-related to your area of profession, career or business, so you see that will be an nice angle to create new, fresh, quality and unique articles that will interest a new group of readers.

5. Other People’s Mistakes and Experiences: What mistakes do people around you and close relatives have made? What moral or personal lessons did you draw from those mistakes or experiences of other people? You can also write them as articles but don’t write the names of those people involved.
Listen to people when they speak about their mistakes and experiences whether good or bad experiences and write articles offering some form of advice on how to avoid those experiences and mistakes especially it caused those people so much pain, regret, anger and financial loss.

6. Re-write Junk Content on Other  Websites: The best way to find junk articles with bad sentence formation, wrong spellings, grammatical errors, wrong presentation of article ideas and article structures is mainly on Article directories and guest post submission sites, under my niche categories, I look for articles that are poorly written, lack concrete facts about the knowledge or information they are sharing with their readers. I print these articles and re-write and do some research and brainstorm on what information or knowledge the authors were trying to communicate with their readers, then I research on the web on more concrete and solid facts to add to the article to make it more unique and quality, then I rewrite the articles and submit on either Triond or other paid site I write for online.
If this process looks clear and understandable to you, you can follow it to create a lot of articles. Why I like this article writing technique is because I don’t have to generate new article ideas, all I do is re-write the junk articles in a unique, smarter, better way and structure with a more professional and catchy title that is keyword optimized.

7. Answer  Peoples’ Questions: There are a lot of question-and-answer websites online where people go to ask unique questions that relates to their various needs. Some of the popular Q&A sites millions of  people visit everyday to ask questions that they need experts to answer those questions. Such Sites are Yahoo Answers, AnswerBag, Mahalo, ExpertBee and Answers.
Visit those websites, register with them. To locate the questions people ask in their niche market or area of specialization, Type in your target niche keyword on the search bar of the website. When questions asked by members of the site appears on the results pages, search for the questions you know you can answer, write an article, publish it on Triond and then submit the article link on the answer site so that members who asked the question can read your article on the topic of their questions. This method can also be used to promote your Triond articles.

8. Keyword Research: As an article writer, keyword research is your “spyglass” to discover untapped markets or keyword industries or niches that you are not meeting with your articles. This technique is needed by Triond writers, bloggers and freelancewriters to find related topics in the area of their expertise or specialization where they can create more and unique articles that are useful and relevant to their readers. Use the Google Keyword Tool to carry out your keyword research online. When you open the tool, type in the particular keyword phrase in the search bar and it will give exact and broad terms related to your keyword niche. When you run out of new article ideas to write in your niche market, use the tool to generate new article ideas without stress. Also, use Nicheaday.com and MarketSamurai Software to carry out keyword research on new keyword niches.

9. Create an Article Series: There are times you have one big article idea that you will not be able to explain in a single article, what you need to do is to create a series for that article idea. This type of article writing technique has the potential to turn your single article idea to tons of  uniquely written articles. All you need to do to create an article series, is to think up a general article idea, divide your idea with the following words: What, How, Where and From into sections and sub-ideas, list your sub-ideas under these words and start providing unique and separate information under each article idea. Then you have created several articles under one article idea.

10. Google Hot Trends: This is just a tool / service by Google to display the top keyword terms a lot of people usually in thousands and even tens of thousands are using to search for a particular information. This is an event based keyword research tool that tells you what thousands of people are searching for at a particular time.

All you need to do is to find out what keywords are trending high (usually events, movies and celebrities), research on the keywords and write articles on them and submit your article on Triond.
When you use these techniques above, I believe you will always come up with new ideas to create unique, relevant and quality articles for your Triond readers. Share this article with your friends and bookmark it for future reference if you find useful and helpful. Share your ideas by making comments.

Listen folks I have been working online for a while and setting up a presence to be able to tell my story to the world and allow my relatives and friends from all over the world to see what cool and new things I have been doing.  Essentially telling my story...

7 Business Apps Every Professional Should Download

Smartphones have given today’s mobile workers the ability to not have to worry about having everything they need before they get moving. Which is great, until they end up in a conference, airplane, or other no-reception zone without the crucial One Thing I Need. Good smartphone and tablet tools don't just provide access – they think ahead and plan for contingencies, like a personal assistant. They’re the tools that can make your job a whole lot easier.

Which apps do this? We happen to have seven of them, linked and ready for installing. The best part: all of them, except one category, are free, and the one that isn’t free is notably less than a hamburger.

1. TripIt

TripIt is a personal assistant for travel, especially if you give it access to your email inbox and let it scan for tickets and itineraries. Afterward, you literally don’t have to do anything except open the app to see all the details: your confirmation number, your departure time, the address of your hotel, the distance to the conference center, and the website of the restaurant you’re supposed to eat at Friday night. Open it up at least once before you journey and TripIt will hold your travel details for offline viewing, in case you don’t want to spring for WiFi on the plane. (iPhone/iPad, Android)

2. QuickOffice

There are all kinds of mobile business apps that claim to work well with Microsoft Office documents, but only so many offer only read-only access. Those that do offer editing tools often want to tie you into their own cloud storage schemes. Not QuickOffice. This app was recently acquired by Google, but it still works as a utilitarian open, edit, and save solution for quick views and adjustments. We’ve talked about the importance of information mobility, and this app provides a great way for mobile workers to access documents on the go. (iTunes, Android)

3. Pocket (or Instapaper)

Which app looks and works better is a matter of taste, but both Pocket and Instapaper do their jobs remarkably well. That job: take blog posts, news articles, and other content on the web (including everything at WorkIntelligent.ly – shameless plug), strip it down to just the text and necessary images, and save them to your device for reading when you have time. Big offices used to have such “clipping services” way back when, but they didn’t let you choose your favorite font. (Pocket: iTunes, Android; Instapaper: iTunes, Android)

4. Agenda (or Fantastical)

It’s odd how unhelpful the default calendar on an iPhone or Android can be. With how much design has gone into the OS of each, how can something as simple as a calendar cause so many headaches? Why can’t you just get an agenda view of everything that’s happening today when you start it up? Why does entering the time and date of an event feel like unlocking a bank vault? My own fix is Agenda Calendar 4, which makes smart guesses about when you want to schedule things, shows your day in a well-designed glance view, and generally gives you more information and links from an event than Calendar. If you frequently use the iPhone’s Reminders function, you might instead try Fantastical 2, which ties directly into the iPhone’s alerts and reminders systems. (Agenda: iTunes, Android; Fantastical: iTunes)

5. Chrome

Chrome is Google’s own browser. Your iPhone already has the Safari browser, and your Android phone likely has its own default browser. So why would you bother to install a browser that shows the same web pages as either of these? One big reason: if you use Chrome on a desktop computer and sign in on both your desktop and phone with your Google account, you can see and open any tab you had open on your desktop browser when you left it. Or just start typing in a few words from the page you already went to into Chrome’s search bar, and Chrome should come up with it. It feels magical (and maybe a bit creepy). (iTunes, Android)

6. CloudCube (Android only)

Maybe you already feel backed up, cloud-connected, and ready to grab your files from anywhere. So cloud-connected, in fact, that you sometimes have a hard time remembering in which cloud you stored that certain file, and where you have room to put that next big one. CloudCube works with all the notable syncing services: Dropbox, Google Drive, SkyDrive, Box, SugarSync, and more. Move files between clouds, see what’s inside each account, and even sync folders between your Android device and your services of choice. (Android)

7. IFTTT (If This Then That) (iPhone only)

Wouldn’t it be neat if every time you took a screenshot of your iPhone, that screenshot was automatically saved to where you want it? Or if every time you completed a Reminder on your phone, it emailed the appropriate person to let them know, automatically? Or if you could see, on your phone, every photo you’ve been tagged in from Facebook? With IFTTT (short for If This Then That), that kind of two-step, non-thinking action is entirely possible. The hardest part is thinking up the “recipes” that you want for your phone, but after playing with the website a bit, you should get a real sense of just how many things can be done without your having to even think about it. Be sure to install this iPhone app so you can take full advantage of that set-and-forget productivity. (iTunes).

8. Cam Scanner

All business must have camscanner. Scan: invoices, receipts, documents with your phone to send to office or others. Crops out background like your knees. Cleans up copy. You can text, email or send to various cloud sites and it works great.

What other business apps do you consider critical to getting the job done either while on the go, or at the office?

8 Efficient Ways To Set Up A Website.

Selling Something Direct? Use A Simple Means Of Purchase. A middleman service like PayPal is perfectly good to begin with. If you have just a small number of items, their HTML buttons are an effective way to test demand. When you make over $1k a month, acquire a merchant account of your own.

  • Pay Freelancers To Make Software For You And Give It Away Free. This may work very well indeed. Research the most popular freeware PHP scripts; could you think of a script you could get programmed and have your own link inserted into it?

  • Put At Least 500 Words Of Paragraphed Text In. If your web pages have duplicate header, footer, left side-bar, right side-bar, and only a sliver of text in the middle, you may incur a duplicate content penalty. You can get a freelance to write 500 mediocre words for $10, or 500 words of marketing copy for a good deal more.

  • Automate, Automate, Automate! The effort involved in web marketing can be very boring. Prior to getting caught up in some lengthy promotion or submission process, think about whether you can get a software or a freelancer to do it for you. Or whether it should be done that way at all.

  • Have More Than One Web Host. Have more than one net hosting account if you have many websites. Spread the websites out over different accounts. That way, if one web host goes 'splat', it will be a minor annoyance in place of a twelve-hour slog getting twenty websites back online. You may put the resource-intensive stuff on the good, costly host, and the less important websites on the $5 per month hosts. You may then, using SSH and FTP, backup one site on-server and FTP it to another account directly. This could save a lot of time. It's also much speedier than downloading a backup to your PC and re-uploading it somewhere else. Have you got a 2MB broadband connection? The 2MB is the theoretical download speed. Ever try uploading a fat file? A lot slower, isn't it?

  • Install A Blogging Software Easily. Wordpress can be installed in moments from the Fantastico section of Cpanel. It allows a non-pro to put their thoughts on the web easily. You should acquire a search engine optimised theme for it; this will make Google index it properly. Such softwares are free; you needn't pay for 'em.

  • Useful Software:

    • 1. Easy Text To HTML Converter. This software might batch convert text files to HTML. See also: dirHtml. WordCleaner may convert Microsoft Word documents to HTML.

    • 2. WinSCP. This is a very clever piece of FTP software.

    • 3. Putty Telnet/SSH Client. A simple-looking, but sophisticated, freeware telnet and SSH client.

    • 4. CGI-Telnet. A cgi script that allows you to run commands on your server, even if your internet host won't give you telnet access.

    • 5. AXS Visitor Tracking System. A very high-spec hit counter.

    • 6. Port 2096. If you have CPanel on your webhost, https://YourDomain.com:2096 is the net address of your email accounts.

    • 7. GetColor! This is a small, simple program to find out the colour code of any page or software on your desktop.

    • 8. Arctan Bulk Replacer. This is a rare thing, a search and replace program for the Windows desktop.

    • 9. '1-4a Rename'. A batch file renamer.

    • 10. Netscape Communicator 4.8. This has a very effective email client (Netscape Messenger) and a decent WYSIWYG HTML editor (Netscape Composer) in it.

  • A Super-Simple Site: Use a text-to-html generator to make web pages from text files. Then use an index generator to create an index HTML page of these files. Clean these pages up in a WYSIWYG web page editor. Then FTP upload them to your webhosting account. Voila! A super-simple web site. Want something more complicated? Get a web hosting account with Cpanel and Fantastico. Look for the 'Wordpress' option in Fantastico, and install it. Then get a search engine optimized theme for your blog; the default install isn't search engine friendly.

  • Use Freelances For Jobs You Lack The Skills For. Is money tight? Try scriptlance.com or rentacoder.com. The key to acquiring premium work is to a) be as clear as possible as to what you want and b) write your spec in simple, concise terms. Your work will likely be done by someone who's first language is not English. Most web marketers give a vague specification and get work they're unhappy with. Pick someone who's had a lot of positive reviews recently. Pay in stages. Use the freelance site's escrow facility. Do not expect to acquire more than you coughed up for, and don't be cheap; if someone does a good job, they deserve a bonus, not carping.

  • Make A Better, Faster, Cheaper Version Of A Popular Product. You can walk a trail someone else has blazed. You may learn from their mistakes. The only down-side is that the opposition will have first-mover advantage and brand-recognition. However, you might also use them to publicise your stuff e.g. "My SnarkWodger 2.1 is faster and cheaper than Big_Name_Brand"; cue controversy, which equals publicity.

  • Beware The Latest $49/$97/$149 Software. There are many web marketers who've realised that a good method of making cash on the web is to exploit other web entrepreneurs, as there are millions of them. This usually takes the form of packaging up, in a software or service, a trick that was novel six months ago. By the time Joe Webmaster gets wind of it, it's dead. Study it thoroughly before plonking down cash for it. Seek out independent reviews.

  • Use A Popular, Inexpensive Web Host. Here are a few filtering criteria:

    • Google PageRank of at least 5. Send them an email or two. See how long it takes to receive a response.

    • They should have a forum (another indication of popularity and customer support).

    • Umpteen features offered (MySQL databases, Cpanel, Fantastico).

    • Recent positive reviews in webmaster forum.

    • Offers Linux servers (Windows costs more, and offers less).

    • Cost per month might be as low as $10, and still have all the features above.

  • Clean Up Your HTML. Dreamweaver adds lots of extra blank space to HTML code, and breaks lines. This is especially annoying in meta tags. Use EditPad's 'Find and Replace' function to get rid of newlines and double blank spaces in your pages.

  • Submit Articles To Article Directories. What you need is a service or a software that will do this for you automatically. Submission by hand is soul-destroying. Ask in web marketer forums about the best softwares and services.

  • Submit To The Top Web Directories, like Yahoo and DMOZ, but don't spend much money or time. Only a few are worth a damn for SEO purposes. You'll only get an occasional visitor from these.

  • Post In Popular Discussion Boards And Blogs, if they'll let you use straight links in your signature. This is a short-term measure if you want to acquire back-links. It's a long-term method if you want to sell to forum members.

  • Be Controversial; whip a few sacred cows. The web is used by many people who delight in pointing out how other people are wrong. You might use this to your advantage to get publicity. It would help, of course, if you truly believed what you were saying.

  • Be First With A New, Popular Good (or a smarter second). MySpace wasn't the first social networking site, but they improved the model. They designed it to be viral. Members could compete to get 'friends', and everyone wants new friends, right? Users could put whatever they wished online, even if it looked like rubbish. Censorship was minimal. Result: Huge popularity, without needing the search engines.

  • Do A Press Release, and consider prior to doing do how you can make it more attractive to journalists. Spammers have lately taken to releasing poor-quality news items to just get backlinks. A better notion would be to investigate how to write a good-quality release and then consider what would be truly interesting to put in it.

  • Beware Of The Guru! There are lots of semi-famous marketers and their fans out there selling videos, courses and books on how to earn lolly in internet marketing. They're marketing tips on how to do marketing! Nice work if you can get it. The best advice you might get about web marketing is on webmaster message boards. Even then, you need to use your own personal noise filter to winnow out the gems from the dross.

  • Web Host Technical Support. Technical support is as important as the software a web host offers. Some web hosts charge $10 per month and respond to support enquiries in 20 minutes. Some charge $40 per month and get back to you next day. As long as the query gets answered, this may not be a problem. If the quality of the support declines, however, it isn't. One day you'll need a quick answer to a very urgent problem. You will thank your god you took pains to find, and pay for, a responsive web host.

  • Webhost Features. Most geeks prefer Unix. It has a longer history, and is more stable. Web hosts offering Unix variants like Linux have always been less expensive. They also seem to offer a wider range of toys. I require SSI (Server Side Includes), SSH (secure Telnet), 10 MySQL databases, Cpanel, PHPMyAdmin and a UK IP number. And you can get this for $15 a month. Things like MySQL databases, Cpanel and SSH access are real stumbling points for many internet hosts. If they're generous with these, you've found a rare jewel.

  • Useful Freeware:

    • 1. NVU Web Editor. This is a pretty good freeware web page editor.

    • 2. GIMP Image Editor. This is a good image and photo manipulation package.

    • 3. OpenOffice, an alternative to the Microsoft office suite. This can save you thousands if you need to buy multiple licences.

    • 4. SimplyMepis. This a Linux operating system package. Like Damn Small Linux, it might be run from a CD; useful in emergencies.

  • Come Up For Air Occasionally. It's very easy to get mired in the minutiae of this or that web project. There are folks whose lives revolve around fiddling with addons to open-source software. You should keep your eyes on the prize; what do you want and what's the most simple, legal way of getting it?

  • I hope these few simple tips will be of some use to you in getting a nice-looking website done quickly.

6 Things You Need To Know When Setting Up Your Company

Many small companies are classed as sole partnerships or proprietorships. That means that the business is owned by one or two people, sometimes more. Having this classification would be good if the business grows and it earns big net profits because then only the proprietors share in the profit. However, when the business goes bust and has to pay its creditors, the personal assets of the owners may be vulnerable to being seized. Incorporating the business as a distinct 'body' (corpus) means that the liability of proprietors to creditors would just be up to the amount of his/their investment in the business.

  • Sole Proprietorship: In a small-sized business owned by one, two or more proprietors and classed as either a sole proprietorship or partnership, most expenses incurred (even operating expenses) are considered expenses of the proprietors and can't be used for tax deductions.

  • Small businesses classified as sole partnerships or proprietorships don't have a separate legal 'personality', so the 'persona' of the company is attached to the 'persona' of the owners. This means they're liable for everything that occurs to the business and to all who suffer damages from such incidents.

  • Sole proprietorships or partnerships are taxed heavily compared to corporations which have lower taxes imposed. Corporations can also claim a range of tax deductions. This makes a large difference to their profitability.

  • Small businesss that are unincorporated have to fend for themselves as distinct from corporations which can conceal themselves under the mantle of the corporate cloak. Under this principle the courts will not interfere with the operations and business decisions of a company unless very necessary. The court will only pull back the cloak of corporate independence when it is shown that it is causing harm to other entities.
  • Small businesss have to look after themselves in terms of getting money for operational and expansion purposes. A corporation has a potentially unlimited source of finance because it has access to various investors who may put their cash in a legal entity like a corporation.

  • Benefits Of Incorporation:

    • 1. You protect yourself and your assets from liabilities that may be accumulated by your business.

•2. You get more tax credits and enjoy more tax deductions.

    • 3. You give your company a separate legal 'persona' that is distinct from the owner(s). You protect your company by putting it under a corporate 'mantle'.

    • 4. You expand your business beyond your person.

    • 5. You lengthen the existence of your business; it goes on even if something happens to you or to the other owners of the company.

    • 6. You increase the capitalisation of your business by getting more investors who will share the losses and profits.

  • Legal 'Personality': Choose which legal personality you wish to give your business. You may choose to make it a limited liability company, general or close corporation, stock or non profit.

  • Name: Choose a name for your company and have it reserved if you can because another business might register that name before you. Make sure that the name you choese does not have the terms 'insurance', 'college', 'university', 'bank' or other words that are not legally permitted.

  • Money: Decide on the amount of start-up capitalisation or the amount of shares that would be authorised for the corporation. Also carefully select a financial institution i.e. bank. This will be the place where you keep your cash and is an important decision.

  • Place Of Incorporation: The state or country where you will form your business is also very critical since there are places that are more business-friendly than others. make sure you choose a country or state that will offer the maximum benefits for your company, tax-wise.

  • Location: Your business location is critical. This will decide legally how you should run your business and will likewise affect how successful it is. Your company needs a location that improves the chances of success.

  • Stability: One of the prime errors other businessmen have made in the past is moving their business around too many times. When picking on your business incorporation, you should have a definite location in your head. Likewise your company name ought to remain the same from the start. This will encourage the popularity of your product or service.
  • Directors: Only file your articles of incorporation after you have decided on your board of directors or board members, depending on the type of corporation you have decided to form.

  • Research Your Market. The financial success of your company will rely on knowing the service or product you will sell. So as to to grow successfully in any business you must understand your industry. This will help you to pick a strategy and a name for your business.

  • Marketing: Set down a clear marketing plan. Getting the word out about the possibilities of your service or product is crucial. Whatever way your strategy works, you need to effectively and clearly speed up this important work. If money is an issue, keep your marketing simple; internet, local ads, business cards.

  • Chamber Of Commerce: Attend local Chamber of Commerce meetings. Many people do not understand that Chambers of Commerce hold meetings attended by local business owners. There could also be other little known business owner clubs. When you are starting off your business's incorporation, these meetings might be very useful.

  • The Small Business Organization (USA). If you're starting your company the local office of the SBO could be a useful destination. They have loads of info about the business you're starting in, the laws overseeing incorporation, the process of starting your company and the requirements to keep it going.

  • Secretary of State Office (USA): The job of governing your company as it pertains to state law is done by the Secretary of State, in the state where you live. They'll be able to provide you with all legal requirements needed to maintain your corporation.

  • Hire A Business Lawyer (USA). Your company incorporation may seem to be a mystery to you. A business lawyer will know each step that should be taken and will know where to file all of the paperwork. In the UK a company formation can be done in minutes at the Companies House website.

  • You Will Need An Accountant. Financial years, payroll, taxes and benefits; these are just a few of the items you ought to be familiar with to head up your business. They could be handled by a licensed accountant a good deal more effectively than attempting to juggle it all on your own. An accountant can help you in a variety of ways. Not just in making the best financial decisions for your incorporation, but also modifying your financial procedures. This could make a big difference when incorporating. It might bring many financial benefits, particularly in the area of taxation.

  • Make sure each partner's role, benefits, and responsibilities are clearly defined from the beginning. You ought to also be sure your business has an exit plan for each partner. This will protect all people joining your business.

  • Your business incorporation is a process with stages. Make sure you do not rush it. Careful planning and going at a moderate pace can help you be more successful.

  • Keep your business issues and your personal issues separate. Otherwise, you're sabotaging the reasons you incorporated in the first place. If you have partners, it's important to have a specific exit-strategy process in place. It will set down the buy-and-sell boundaries of a partner's company interest. This can prevent serious financial and legal issues from cropping up. Each procedure your corporation will follow should be drafted into the by-laws of your business.

  • I hope these few handy ideas will assist you in getting a worthwhile company formation quickly and efficiently.
